What I love most about Union Square:
It's close to where I live
What I dislike about Union Square:
The traffic reconstruction project which made for some pedestrian-unfriendly intersections, Prospect St, and Somerville Ave, most of all.
About Me:
I chose the "just interested" category because I live on Beacon St, close to but not in Union Sq. Having a rail line to go to in five minutes' walk would be great for me. I've seen what's left of the old rail station on Newton St and Webster Ave. (the concrete steps are in plain sight). I would expect this location to be the cheapest alternative, since it would involve minimal land taking. The house across Webster Ave. is now for sale, good time to take it for a headhouse location. I would like to see how Main Street would accommodate the abutters since they would have a lot to say about this station location, doubtless. If the government were to take the properties by eminent domain, where would they go? At what expense? I would look forward to more core-city type development in the square itself. It would add much-needed tax base to the city of Somerville. At heart, I would like to see an underground extension right into the square with the headhouses there. But, I reckon we are looking at big bucks there, probably around $600 million. Could anyone ever justify such an expense?
