Union Square Network

News, notices and forums about our neighborhood

Someone was been doing everything they can to destroy a small garden we planted around a tree on the sidewalk in front of our home. First they trampled them, then they ripped the flowers off, and today I came home to discover that they stole the bulbs! The actually took the bulbs right out of the ground! If you see a tulip thief on Bow St. please report it to the authorities. I'm extremely saddened by this behavior. Yesterday(literally) our recycling bin, today our tulips. What is Union Sq. coming to?

If the tulip bandit is reading this, why are you doing this? Do you not like flowers? Can you not afford your own? Do you just hate nice things? Please stop. Thank you.

Ryan;

The tulip thief might actually be squirrels! My wife and I neatly planted a long row of tulip bulbs last season ( not in Somerville ). Within a few days squirrels had dug a hole over each planted bulb and carried them away. The end result was a small plot of soil that looked like it had been carpet bombed. It was both infuriating and funny at the same time.

Squirrels were raiding my plants too, so i put a bunch of my dogs hair around all the plants. seemed to do the trick, or perhaps a coincidence.

Good Idea! I think I heard something like that before. My dog doesn't shed though and is 1/10 the size of yours, at best so I could maybe save one plant, haha. We did find a recipe for a garlic and soap mixture that we spray on the plants. It' keeps them away for the most part except when the rain washes it away (like it has this whole month). Now we have slugs eating all our plants. Just picked up some slug killer for that. Once it stops raining I'll see how it works.

Thanks Clarence. That is a possibility. I think the squirrels raided our garden in the back yard a while ago and popped off all the tupid heads, but they didn't seem to touch the front garden. Perhaps they finally found their way to the front. If nothing else, this reasoning restores my faith in humanity.

Looks like there's been some likely human vandalism of late in the flower barrels here in Union Sq. Over on Bow Street I heard a report of plants being pulled up and just left to die and this has been happening each day. Anyone else having problems with their sidewalk planters?
