USMS is starting a new effort. Design Annex will be a coworking/networking space in Union Square for creative industry professionals. I'm so excited about it. I thought folks might be interested in following the progress so I've started a Twitter feed and will have updates appearing on the USMS website. Follow the progress -- http://twitter.com/designannex
The Design Annex will be a place to grow the design industry in Somerville by providing designers in a variety of fields with professional, affordable and secure office space and enriching programming. The goal of the effort is to build an engaging, collabortative and supportive community of designers and a robust, local network of thriving businesses. Slated to open June 1, the 1400 square foot space would include a co-working space with high-speed internet access, kitchenette, conference room and lounge with a resource library. We're also looking into the possibility of providing shared equipment like a plotter and color Munki.
Recent studies show that Massachusetts is ranked #1 in the country for architects, #2 for designers and #4 for artists overall. Somerville, despite our overall lack of business density, is within the top ten for the numbers of architecture and design firms. Almost half of these firms are very small with four or fewer employees. By networking these small businesses and supporting their development with shared resources, USMS seeks to advance this super-cluster and to leverage other business development.
